What is Waukesha Metal 23BI?

Decades ago, Waukesha Foundry developed WM88 – a specialty alloy designed to meet the unique needs of food processing plants, where liquid lubricants are prohibited due to FDA standards. WM23BI is the next evolution of Waukesha Foundry specialty alloys. Developed as an alternative to WM88, it is an anti-galling alloy with a higher yield strength and hardness than WM88. Like all Waukesha Metal specialty alloys, WM23BI is also readily castable and machinable. Unlike other non-galling alloys, WM23BI is forged to perform at low temperatures.

Primary Characteristics & Applications

Superior Anti-Galling Properties: Ideal for high-friction environments, including machines that create metal-on-metal contact.

Enhanced Hardness and Yield Strength: From processing ice creams to frozen foods, WM23BI helps keep blades and other cutting components sharp – even after repeated use and exposure to low temperatures.

Corrosion Resistance: Designed for prolonged operation life, even under tough food processing conditions – including harsh chemical cleaning agents and constant moisture-exposure.

Technical Specifications

Physical and Chemical Properties:
  • Blend: A proprietary formula of carbon, manganese, bismuth, tin, nickel, and zinc.
  • Hardness: 200 BHN Typ
  • Yield strength: 48 ksi TS, 45 ksi YS, 3.5% elongation

Testing and Quality Assurance

Anti-Galling Testing: Waukesha Metal 23BI is tested to ASTM G98 and G198 standards for galling against other materials and under radial motion. In addition, we perform regular sample testing on our materials to assure wear-resistance. These tests include surface inspections, wear volume measurements and detailed friction testing. We perform gall testing on all parts on-site and these results are available to all of Waukesha’s Waukesha Metal 23BI customers upon request.
