Q.  What does heat treating actually do to the metal, and how do you decide which process to use?

A.  Heat treating changes the internal structure of a metal to improve properties such as strength, hardness, toughness, or wear resistance. By carefully controlling heating and cooling cycles, metallurgists can tailor a casting’s performance based on how it will be used in the field.

The process selected depends on factors such as alloy type, part geometry, customer specifications, and performance requirements. Different applications require different balances of strength, durability, and toughness, so the heat-treatment process is chosen to best support the casting’s intended function.
