Q. What does heat treating actually change in a casting?

A.  Heat treating changes the microstructure of the metal, which directly influences how the casting performs in service. By controlling temperature, time, and cooling rate, we can adjust properties such as strength, hardness, toughness, ductility, and wear resistance.

It can also help relieve internal stresses that develop during solidification and cooling, improving dimensional stability and consistency.

The important thing to remember is that heat treatment doesn’t change the alloy itself, it changes how that alloy’s structure is arranged, allowing us to tailor its properties more closely to the demands of the application.
